Tata Motors To Sack 3,000 Temporary Staff At Pune Unit

Tata Motors, India's largest commercial vehicle maker, said it would dismiss around 3,000 temporary staff at its Pune factory, following its decision a week ago to cut production and dismiss a similar number of temporary workers at its Jamshedpur unit, reports media.

The Pune plant will resume operations from Friday after it was closed from November 21.

Tata Motors has resorted to such limited-period block closures at its commercial vehicles facilities at Jamshedpur (from November 6-8 and from November 25-59), Lucknow (November 10-15) and Pune from November 21 to 26, in order to match production with demand and avoid unnecessary build-up of inventory in the company or with the company's dealers, the spokesman reportedly said.

Bentley is betting big on the Indian market, with its executives recently meeting executives of auto and auto component companies in Pune

When Volkswagen (VW) starts production at Pune next year, it will be one of its fastest built factory. The German car maker built its facility using virtual 3D tools developed by Bentley Systems, the US-based infrastructure software solutions company.

Bentley Systems, Solutions Executive Factories, Torsten Rohrlack, said, “3D intelligent modeling for factories has solved many problems for auto manufacturers as they need an extremely short time-to-market and their models change very fast.

Companies wasted a lot of time and money in modifying factories to suit the manufacturing of newer models, while the time-to-market also increased significantly. Many have therefore shifted to the use of simulation and visualization tools.” He added, “Our software products allow companies to design and develop fully-working model of their facilities virtually before even a single hole is dug into the ground.”

Our software integrates with product designing software like Catia and Delmia (from Dassault Systems), which allows companies to see their products being manufactured virtually,” General Motors built its plants 25% faster and 10-15% cheaper using Bentley’s software, Mr Rohrlack said. Bajaj Auto to kick-start low-cost, sub-125cc bike priced around Rs 30,000

why is Bajaj ready to peddle low-cost bikes when market leader Hero Honda Motors - which is a well entrenched player in the entry level motorcycle segment - has shied away from this segment till now?

"We just don’t know why Bajaj bikes are not selling!"

Bajaj Auto could be devising a multi-pronged strategy to generate growth in these troubled times. The company, which has seen a significant slowdown in domestic bike offtake over the last several months, may have already developed a low-cost motorcycle even as it works on upgrading the XCD platform for launching a “sports” bike next month.

Though the company has been vehemently denying any such move, industry sources say Bajaj has just begun testing a low-cost product in export markets such as Nigeria. According to these sources, this is a “sub-125 cc” bike and a debate is currently on within the company on whether to price it around Rs 30,000 (lower than the cheapest bike available in the market today) or slightly higher. Sources indicated that the brand name for the new product could be “Steel”, but this could not be confirmed.

Bajaj may be able to price this bike lower than existing, entry level motorcycles by importing many components from low-cost sourcing bases such as China. To read more, please, visit - DNA

Renault and Mahindra, Bajaj Auto ventures curbed

French major Renault SA has begun to alter its India strategy, keeping pace with changing market realities and also the different partnerships it has forged in India.

Renault has a 49:51 joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra, besides being part of a three-way partnership with sister company Nissan and Bajaj Auto for manufacturing the ultra low cost car.

On the low-cost car front, Bilaine said the avowed price tag of $2,500-3,000 would be very difficult to maintain in the current global meltdown scenario.

“We are in the middle of a financial crunch. The rupee has plummeted and the inflation is also very high. It (to maintain the price point) is very challenging. We are still working on the principles of $2,500.”

The low-cost car project is initially only for the Indian market, slated for launch in 2011 and eventually 3 lakh units of the car would be manufactured per year. To read more, please, visit - DNA

Demand slump: Tata Motors may shut Pune unit for 6 days

A day after it announced plans to briefly shut down its heavy commercial vehicles plant in Jamshedpur, Tata Motors appeared to be mulling a similar closure of its passenger vehicle plant in Pune.

'Production will match demand' is all that a Tata Motors spokesperson had to say when asked about reports that the Pune facility would be shut down from November 22-27. He however, neither confirmed nor denied the reports. -The Economic Times

Obama can't overlook Indian outsourcing industry

Can US president elect, Barack Hussein Obama, afford to lose billion of dollars they get from Indian outsourcing industry in the current financial meltdown by cracking a whip on Indian outsourcing industry? Well, going by the initial trends of the IT sector after the election results in US, the outsourcing industry in India seems assured that the US economy can't overlook them.

Over 80 per cent of the BPOs and call-centres in India are regulated by the US companies--the main pillar of Indian outsourcing industry. To read more, please, visit - -The Economic Times

First Nano to roll out from Pune in early December

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi may have successfully wooed Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata to set up the Rs. 1,500-crore small car project in his state, but the first bunch of cars will be rolled out from Tata's Pune plant in early December.

A day before Ratan Tata signed an agreement with the Modi government, Deshmukh (chief minister of Maharashtra) had a meeting with Tata officials. Certain lands near Aurangabad and Ahmadnagar were shown to them, but they did not agree with the proposals. "They were keen on lands near Pune, but we have no land there now,'' he added. Mahindra & Mahindra enters into the two-wheeler segment by agreeing to buy the assets of Kinetic Motor Company for Rs 110 crore

M&M will buy the assets through a new company called Mahindra Kinetic Scooters and Motorcycles, which will own the assets of the Pune-based Kinetic Motor. M&M will own 80% of the new company. Kinetic Motor, which makes two-wheelers, will own 20% in the new joint venture firm, M&M said in a statement.

“Kinetic Motor is a strategic fit with our overall two-wheeler strategy,” said M&M vice-chairman Anand Mahindra. “The acquisition gives us an opportunity to emerge as a full range player with a presence in almost every segment of the automobile industry,” he said.

While the deal will help M&M get a foothold in the scooters and motorcycles segment, the new JV is open to talking to other global two-wheeler players to enter the higher end of the two-wheeler space. The JV will rely heavily on global sourcing to get competitive and build a differentiated brand. Sulajja Firodia Motwani, the current MD of Kinetic Motor will be a non executive director in the new company, while Anoop Mathur M&M’s president designate of two-wheelers will spearhead the new venture.

The strong in-house design and development competencies provided by Mahindra Engineering Services and the recent acquisition of Italy-based two-wheeler design house Engines Engineering, coupled with Kinetic Motors’ expertise will help in getting a strong position in the rapidly growing Indian and global two-wheeler market, Mr Mahindra added.

The Rs 110 crore will be used to repay some liabilities of Kinetic Motor which has term loans of around Rs 60 crore. Incidentally, through the acquisition, M&M does not get a stake in Kinetic Motor or Kinetic Engineering.

But SYM, a Taiwanese maker of two-wheelers, which has a strategic alliance and a 11% stake in Kinetic Motor, will continue to work with the new JV, Ms Motwani said. It is not clear if SYM will separately pick up a stake in the new company or will hold its stake though Kinetic Motor.

The move would boost M&M as it is more economical compared to putting up a greenfield unit which is more expensive and time-consuming, Mr Mahindra said. Besides, Kinetic has a product portfolio ranging from mopeds, scooterettes, scooters to motorcycles. Kinetic Motor’s promoters, the Firodia family, owns about 54.8% in the company. The firm needs funds to revamp its operations and had been looking at raising anything between $100-125 million.

Kinetic Motor will continue as the holding company and will venture into new business areas other than two-wheelers, Ms Motwani said. “We have a non-compete clause with Mahindras. We will focus now on the component and infrastructure businesses.”

Within the overall two-wheeler strategy, scooters will form the entry point into the Indian market and will be an important part of the company’s overall two-wheeler product portfolio, M&M officials said. While the existing Kinetic dealerships will be retained, the JV is currently working on the modalities of branding the products.

Founded in 1974, the Kinetic group launched the moped Luna in 1974. In 1984, it launched India’s first gearless scooter. Although the two-wheeler market is currently in slow gear, Mr Mahindra says penetration levels are still low at 48 vehicles per 1,000 people which augurs well for the future growth of the industry. Besides, empowerment of women and increased scooter demand in Tier II cities and small towns will also add to the growth.

The Indian two-wheeler industry is the second-largest in the world with total domestic demand of 7.2 million in 2007-08. The two leading players are Hero Honda, the market leader, closely followed by Bajaj Auto. The market is dominated by motorcycles.

NRW.Invest GmbH, the economic development agency of the Federal state of North-Rhine Westphalia, to open it's Indian headquarters in Pune

“The idea is to encourage more and more Indian investment in the state. Bharat Forge is not the only Indian company to take over a German company. Recently Metalink/Tulsi of Belgaum bought out Moenchen Gladbach, a foundry that was on the verge of closure. Ashok Leyland has come there in a big way.

The German government now wants to take this further and make it more easy and convenient for investors to come to Germany by providing them with a service that would be a point of contact for all their investment needs,” said Dusseldorf-based Golak C Misra, their chief representative in India who is currently in Pune scouting for staff and office space.

“Here in India we are looking at all sectors - from automotive to pharma. I have been meeting up with many business houses here in India and all of them are keen on the idea, especially when it comes to takeover bids. Of course the German government is more keen on collaborations. Pune is big as far as German companies are concerned. Volkwagon itself is planning to invest 500 million euros in the next two years at its establishment here. So having our headquarters here made sense,’ added Misra.

Outsourcing the Offshore Operations

A monumental shift in how Western corporations tap into Indian talent is taking place. Companies are moving away from running their own offshoring operations and handing at least some of those jobs to Indian tech-services specialists.

There has been a steady drumbeat of similar large deals in recent years, but industry executives and analysts say the pace is quickening—driven by currency swings, the increased costs of doing business in India, and the need for some Western financial services to raise cash to handle shortfalls elsewhere. "The writing is on the wall," says Sudin Apte, an analyst at market researcher Forrester Research (FORR). "This is not working anymore."

Accel IT Academy, Pune to conduct a free VLSI seminar on 'Verification Engineering' on 11 July 2008 at its FC Road office

What is verification all about?

Verification in Chip Design is the most vital part of the complete design process. Unless a design is verified, we cannot be 100 percent sure that the design will work correctly. In present times, the chip design process has become very much complex, and billions of gates are added on one small chip.

Even one bug in design can cost billions or trillions of bucks. So, you can well imagine just how important verification is!
